We are delighted you will be joining us at
Reflecting in Action on December 3-8, 2000. We have designed the program with
two objectives in mind:
- Developing your ability to advance your own and others’ learning
in the midst of difficult interactions.
- Making the week’s learning as useful to you as possible so
that you can bring it home.
As preparation for the workshop, we ask that you write a personal
case, review selected readings, and attend to the logistics
of lodging and travel (see below).
Writing a Personal Case
As explained in the “Guidelines
for writing a case," please describe a difficult interaction that you would like to use as learning material.
Prior to the seminar we will group these cases by theme so that we
can select several cases for in-depth discussion in small groups.
If you have questions about writing a case, please call
Bob Putnam at (617) 965-8103 or Phil McArthur at (617) 354-6160.
Because we rely on your cases to make the week useful to you, please
fax (617-965-7863) or email your case no later than Monday, November 27, 2000.
You will also have the opportunity to select a situation to practice with video-based feedback. You can use the situation described in your personal case for this purpose or choose a different situation.
Readings
We suggest two articles for your review prior to the program:
- “Teaching Smart People How to Learn, an article by Chris Argyris, provides a perspective on the challenges people encounter in reflecting on their own reasoning. We will mail you a copy, and you can also download it (for a small fee) from the Harvard Business Review by clicking on its title.
- “Recipes
and Reflective Learning,” an article by Bob Putnam, describes the process by which a
consultant learned to use skills of reflective conversation with
his clients. You can download the article by clicking on its title.
